From Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (1:15) : King of England 871-99. Alfred was one of the greatest men in history. He was crowned king at Winchester 871; founded the British navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws, built schools and monasteries, and invited scholars to live at his court. He was a good scholar and translated many books. Also mentioned (44:15), (162:17), (192:20).

Subject: Re: Ancient Saxon lineage"
"There is no contemporary source for Egbert's wife. The name "Raedburh" comes from a medieval manuscript quoted by W. G. Searle (Anglo-Saxon Bishops, Kings and Nobles, London 1899, 343) as "MS Trin Coll Oxf x". She is described there as "regis Francorum sororia" which can only be a reference to Charlemagne; however there is no such sister known. Since Egbert was certainly in exile at Charlemagne's court, it is perfectly plausible that he married his wife there. If the tradition has any value, then the best guess is that she was probably a sister-in-law, but she could just as well have been a lady of the Court. Settipani (La prehistoire des Capetiens, 308 n791) is willing to accept the name."

If Redburge was St. Ida, ten she is the same person as St.Ida of Autun

Subject: Re: Egbert of England:
. "It should be borne in mind that the earlier generations of the Wessex genealogy, as we possess it today, bear many hallmarks of what are known as foundation myths and may very well be inventions, long after the fact, to glorify retro- actively the history of the dynasty that eventually unified England. In particular, there are many discrepancies between the account of the foundation of Wessex given by Bede and that in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The unreliability of many of the dates in the earlier generations of the pedigree is now taken for granted, and there is no way to reconcile the Chronicle's strong implication that Cerdic's people first settled in S. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, with Bede's statement centuries earlier that Hampshire and Wight were not brought under the dominion of the kings of Wessex until much later. We also have 2 distinct versions of the pedigree, one making Cynric the son of Cerdic and the other making him Cerdic's grandson (son of Cerdic's son Creoda). Finally, some name elements in the first generations of the Wessex pedigree, esp. Cynric itself, appear more British (!) than Saxon.
. For an excellent, concise and highly readable summary of problems surrounding all the early Anglo-Saxon royal genealogies, see Barbara Yorke's _Kings and Kingdoms of Early Anglo-Saxon England_ (Hardback: Seaby, 1990, rpt 1992; ppb Routledge, 1997 ISBN 0-415-16639-X)."

Per Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (1:3), King of West Saxons 534-60.
Dumville's revised dating of the early Wessex kings, as given in Yorke's "Kings and Kingdoms of early Anglo-Saxon England", places his reign and death about twenty years later than previously thought.

Leo van de Pas contributed to GEN-MEDIEVAL on 29 Dec 1998:
. "Cynric (King of Wesses 534-560) who, in 495, came over to England with his father and, in 534, succeeded him as King of the West Saxons (Wessex). In 552 he fought with the Britons on the spot that is called Sarum, putting them to flight."

Stewart Baldwin posted to soc.genealogy.medieval on 8 Aug 1998 (in part):
Subject: Re: Anglo Saxon Chronicle - Cerdic & Cynric etc.
. "As for the problem with Creoda, he seems to appear in the earlier genealogies, and is omitted from the later ones given in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and it appears that whoever rewrote the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle to expand the arrival of Cerdic back to 495 also chose to omit Creoda from the genealogy. Thus, assuming again that Cerdic and Cynric existed at all, the version in which Cynric is son of Creoda and grandson of Cerdic seems more likely than the alternative in which Cerdic is Cynric's father."

Note: Notes
Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (1:1).
"Founder of the West Saxon Kingdom in England. Reigned 519-34. Arrived in England from the Saxon lands on the continent in 495. "This year came two leaders into Britain, Cerdic and Cynric, his son, with five ships, at a place that is called Cerdics' Ore and they fought with the Welsh the same
day." Thus briefly does the old Saxon Chronicle record one of the most important events in the history of the English nation. Twenty four years later, after defeating Arthur and obliging him to yield Hants and Somerset, Cerdic caused himself to be crowned king of Wessex, at Winchester. This invasion of Britain established on the throne of Wessex a ruler who was destined to be the forefather of nearly all the sovereigns of England."
Dumville's revised dating of the early Wessex kings, as given in Yorke's "Kings and Kingdoms of early Anglo-Saxon England", places his reign and death twenty years later than previously thought.
Leo van de Pas contributed to GEN-MEDIEVAL on 29 Dec 1998:
. "Cerdic (King of the West Saxons 519-534), was a Saxon earldorman, together with his son Cynric came to England in 495 and founded a settlement on the coast of Hampshire. In 519 father and son fought with the Britons at a place called Charford and from the same year onwards Cerdic assumed the title of King of the West Saxons. They probably conquered the Isle of Wight in 534, the year that Cerdic died."

The pre-Cerdic generations in the official West Saxon genealogy were shown to be a fabrication in K. Sisam, "Anglo-Saxon royal genealogies",
Proceedings of the British Academy 39 (1953), 287-348.

Note: From here back to Scaef the line follows Asser's Life of Alfred the Great. The note given under Cerdic, copied from Stevens' notes, which says, "The pre-Cerdic generations in the official West Saxon genealogy were shown to be a fabrication in K. Sisam, "Anglo-Saxon royal genealogies", Proceedings of the British Academy 39 (1953), 287-348. " , is a matter that I am still investigating.
The "shown to be a fabrication" part is disputed by Bill Cooper, ("After the Flood", Bill Cooper, New Wine Press, Chichester, West Sussex, 1995), when he quotes Sisam as follows:
"'The Biblical names show the aritificial character of this lengthened pedigree and the crudeness of the connexions that passed muster. Otherwise they need not detain us.'[1] This rather large assumption, however, merely led him into further difficulties, for he was then led to dismiss with equal abruptness everything else that he had previously written concerning the lists of even non-biblical names!: 'Beyond Cerdic, all is fiction or error, and if the names themselves are old, they were not attached to the ancester of the West Saxon kings by old tradition.'[2] We could ask what they were attached by if not by old tradition, although it is more to our purpose to consider that Sisam recognized that one part of the Saxon genealogy depends very much upon the other. If one section collapses, then so do the others.[3]
[1] Sisam, K., Anglo-Saxon Royal Genealogies., Proc. of Brit. Academy. 39:287-348, quote is on page 320
[2] Ibid, p. 322

To be fair to Sisam, and Stevens who refers to him, I have not yet read the whole article.
