In 1330 or 1331, King Edward III restored to him the lands and honours that his father had forfeited. Prior to this they had been in the possession of Edmund, Earl of Kent (the 6th son of King Edward I), who was attained and beheaded in 1330.
In 1334 Richard was made Justiciar of North Wales for life. In 1339 governor of Carnarvon Castle; in 1345 Sherriff of Shropshire for life. He distinguished himself in the French wars, being Admiral of the West 1340-1 and 1345-7 and commanding the second division at the Battle of Crecy in 1346. He was at the fall of Calais in 1347.
For the details on his first mariage to ISABEL DESPENSER and its subsequent annulment see her notes.
In 1361, upon the death of his aunt Joan de Warenne, he succeeded to the vast Warenne estates and to the Earldom of Surrey.
